A Word on Writing from William Zinsser
By Tom Castor | October 17, 2024 | To say it more simply (On Writing)
William Zinsser’s On Writing Well was first published nearly 50 years ago. I bought my first copy less than a decade after that. The book is a classic guide to writing non-fiction with clarity, simplicity, and style.
Here are a few gleanings from the advice he offers:
- Clarity and Simplicity: Zinsser emphasizes that good writing should be clear and straightforward. He advises writers to eliminate clutter and unnecessary words, focusing on conveying ideas in the most direct way possible.
- Economy of Words: Every word should serve a purpose. Zinsser encourages writers to trim down their sentences and avoid filler words or redundant phrases that do not add value to the writing.
- Voice and Style: He stresses the importance of finding and maintaining a personal voice. Zinsser believes that writing should reflect the writer’s personality and that each writer’s style should be unique and authentic.
- Revision and Editing: Writing is a process that involves multiple drafts. Zinsser advocates for rigorous self-editing, suggesting that writers constantly refine and revise their work to improve its clarity and impact.
- Be Yourself: Authenticity is key in writing. Zinsser advises writers to write about what they know and care about, rather than trying to mimic others or cater to trends.
- Understanding the Audience: While maintaining one’s voice is important, Zinsser also highlights the need to consider the reader’s perspective. Writing should be engaging and accessible, keeping the reader’s interests and understanding in mind.
- Confidence and Enthusiasm: Zinsser encourages writers to be confident in their writing. Writing with enthusiasm and energy can make a piece more compelling and enjoyable to read.
- Avoid Jargon: Zinsser warns against the use of jargon, technical language, or overly complex words that can alienate readers. He advocates for plain, everyday language that communicates effectively.
- Tell a Story: Even in non-fiction, Zinsser suggests using storytelling techniques to engage readers. He encourages the use of anecdotes, examples, and a narrative flow to make writing more compelling.
- Practice and Persistence: Writing well takes time and practice. Zinsser advises writers to be patient with themselves and to keep writing, revising, and learning as they go.
If you are interested in becoming a compelling writer, Zinsser’s book is worth the price ($2.00 in the last used bookshop I checked). Perhaps this summary will send you shopping.
