New Reasons to Pray for Myanmar

By Tom Castor | March 7, 2024 |

We have written multiple times about the struggles faced by the people in Myanmar. Since the military takeover, all of the people in the country have suffered, especially the minority people there. In what is now a civil war, the military has enacted new policies that are making life even more difficult. We have a friend who is a pastor and regional leader there. He has been responsible for the translation and distribution of CSM books in both Burmese and Mizo-Chin for all of Myanmar and the Chin provinces in bordering India.

Here is a portion of a note we received from him today.

Hope you are well. The military regime has issued an order of conscription that every man between 18 and 35 years of age must go to military service to fight battles against the people’s defense forces, as the military soldiers always lose battles. Many of them died, and many of them surrendered. As they had no hope of achieving victory over the civil war, they issued the order of conscription on February 10, 2024. Many parents here are very confused, sad, angry, and fearful for their sons. We also have some young men of those ages. We are very discouraged about that order. This has been really shocking the whole country.  Many young men are fleeing their homes for their security. This also affects our churches and missional work here. We are fervently praying to God that the new order of conscription will not be implemented by the military regime. Please pray for that, too.

Right now, I am busy thinking about how to send our young men to safe places. The problem is that all access points are blocked by the military.  Our situation is more and more complicated. So life and work here is very difficult in these days. We truly pray for God’s soon intervention for the people of Myanmar.

Your brother in Christ,

As we understand the order, all men in the designated age range will either report for service or be imprisoned. Those conscripted will, in many cases, be forced to fight against their own ethnic people groups.

Please pray for our friend, the people of Myanmar, the church of SE Asia, and the pastors and leaders in Yangon who are working to share Christ there in increasingly dangerous circumstances.
