MissionAssist, YouVersion, BibleGateway ~ and other “Escape Routes”
Several years ago, we partnered with Wycliffe Associates in Wales to help us with English to English (complex to simple) translations on some of our publications. They not only helped train us in their translation methodology but assigned translators to assist us in simplifying some previously published material. Wycliffe Associates in the UK would later change their name to MissionAssist and expand their ministry, but Simplified English translation work would still be at the heart of who they are and what they do.
One of the agreements we made with MissionAssist was to allow them to distribute our book, Simple Truths for the New Believer for free on their EasyEnglish Bible Resource page.
Over the following years, two things happened.
One, the MissionAssist EasyEnglish translation was accepted by and included as a resource in the YouVersion catalog. YouVersion is the creator and distributor of the Bible App and the Bible.com website. The YouVersion Bible App is the world’s most widely used Bible App.
Our generous partners make it possible for us to offer 3,000 Bible versions in 2,000 languages for free, and without advertising.(https://www.youversion.com/the-bible-app/)
Two, the EasyEnglish translation was also included in the translation options at BibleGateway website, one of the most widely used sites for Bible engagement sites totaling over 20 million unique visitors per month. This has meant a marked increase in visits to the EasyEnglish Bible website which has led to a marked increase in visits to the RESOURCE link. Which has led to even greater exposure to the free Simple Truths resource available there. Yes, it is a circuitous route, but it IS a route nonetheless. One that we would not have anticipated – and yet another way that our little book has “escaped.”
While we know that we have approximately 700,000 in print and distribution to date, we have never kept track of the eBooks that have been downloaded from the multiple sites where they are available.
Nor have we kept track of the books that have been printed and distributed by our partners in the languages where they are using them.
We make responsible decisions as to the use of the investment of our resources. We work diligently to choose our partners wisely. Then, with them and through the support of our friends, we sow. Widely. Open-handedly. Indiscriminately.
And, at the end of the day, we know that we are not the ones keeping score.
Please pray that God will continue to use what we have done to touch many lives for eternity.
